Works in the permanent collection

In November 2019, Leighton House began a major project to refurbish the twentieth century additions to the museum. Following Leighton’s death, his collection was sold off and the house was stripped of its original interior design. New free to visit areas include the De Morgan Café with views to the garden, historical displays and a striking 11-metre contemporary mural by Iranian artist, Shahrzad Ghaffari. The museum has been returned to its full splendour and is a stunning testament to Leighton’s life and work.

De Morgan Café, Shop and Outdoor spaces

Please remember to double check opening hours with the venue concerned before making a special visit. Two gender-neutral toilets are found on the lower basement level without step-free access. Unfortunately, due to the historic nature of this museum, there are currently no accessible toilets or baby change facilities. Pets are not allowed inside Leighton House and Sambourne House, including outdoor spaces and the De Morgan Café at Leighton House.

But I did spot some originals by Leighton, Millais and Tintoretto. The National Art Pass lets you enjoy free entry to hundreds of museums, galleries and historic places across the UK, while raising money to support them. Frederic Leighton was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire in 1830 to a wealthy medical family, the second of three children. At an early age he showed an interest in drawing, and went on to study art on the continent, despite his parents’ early reservations about his choice of career. Leighton did undeniably succeed – Queen Victoria bought his first major painting in 1855, and in 1878 he reached the pinnacle of his profession, with his election as President of the Royal Academy of Arts. He also received numerous international honours and was highly regarded by his peers.

All suitcases and any bag larger than 55cm x 40cm x 20cm are not permitted at either of our museums. We recommend that large backpacks are not taken into the historical areas of either Leighton House or Sambourne House. Both Leighton House and Sambourne House do not have any onsite parking and we recommend travelling by public transport where possible. There are no drop-off parking spaces at Leighton House and Sambourne House.

A screen with a gallery partitions off the far end of the room. Among other things, you’ll see maquettes and photographs of Michelangelo sculptures from the Medici Chapels in Florence. There are red walls and oriental carpets on the walls and floor. Cabinets are filled with books and decorated with sculptures. This room is a small antechamber that Leighton referred to as his “snug.” It served as a second, and more intimate, studio space.

Donations: Help to support our museums

He, at first, built a relatively modest house but the proceeded to embellish and expand it over the course of the next 30 years until his death. I consider the museum a hidden gem that’s absolutely worth visiting. You could go just to see the Arab Hall, the standout feature.

Access to the historic house does require a ticket, however, with our Pay What You Want scheme and ticket concessions, there are opportunities to visit at reduced rates. Throughout the 20th century the identity of the museum changed from being Frederic Leighton’s former studio-home to being a venue for a more general borough museum and events space. In the process, many of the interior fittings and finishes were lost. This coincided with a period when interest in Victorian culture was at a low point. Leighton House is a discreet house with a red brick facade that doesn't even attract much attention from those who walk down the street. From the outside, it doesn't even seem that the building holds so many charms and beautiful works.

From conservation works to providing materials for learning workshops, find out more about what your donation could achieve. Free to visit year-round, the newly landscaped garden at Leighton House is a peaceful oasis to escape the hustle and bustle of London. Have your photo taken with contemporary artist Shahrzad Ghaffari's spectacular mural, Oneness. Here, a new display showcasing Leighton’s preparatory drawings and his only Colour Sketch for Flaming June can also be enjoyed, from 14 February 2024 .

Later, Leighton used the Silk Room to display works by contemporary artists who were also his friends. In his dining room, Leighton entertained many celebrated artists and society figures of his day. The walls are hung with prints and drawings from Leighton’s collection. There is 19th century Ottoman velvet with silver work on the walls and tables. In 1896, one day after becoming a lord, Leighton died of heart failure at 65. At 26, he debuted at the Royal Academy with the painting Cimabue’s Celebrated Madonna, an imaginary procession of Renaissance artists.

Like other artists, he struggled to finish his paintings in the winter, with the poor natural light of a gloomy winter. Just before his death in 1896, Leighton was ennobled, becoming Baron Leighton of Stretton. He is the only British artist to have been awarded this honour and is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral. There are no lifts located at Sambourne House and unfortunately the house not wheelchair accessible. Weather permitting, the garden will be open for visitors to enjoy.

It’s a turquoise mural painted onsite over a 9 week period. Props and painting materials were stored here too, allowed the main studio to be more orderly. Leighton’s time was organized around the submission of his paintings for inclusion in the annual exhibition of the Royal Academy each spring. This was where almost all the paintings from Leighton’s mature career were produced. Indeed, it was the only bedroom in the house except for servants quarters.

Also on display in the Learning Centre are other original artworks gifted to the museum by artists who have led workshops with Leighton House, as well as a rotating gallery of student artworks. Continuing the story of the artists of the Holland Park Circle, in the museum’s newly created basement space, you can watch an introductory video about Frederic Leighton and the Holland Park Circle. Created during the transformative project, Hidden Gem to National Treasure, the Tavolozza Drawings Gallery at Leighton House provides a brand new exhibition space specifically designed for the display of drawings. Within three years of the house being completed, Leighton undertook the first of what would be a series of extensions and alterations. To increase the size of the studio on the first floor, the east wall was taken down and the house extended by some 5 metres. The extension incorporated a new canvas store accessed via a trapdoor in the floor of the studio and changed the way the models entered the studio via the service staircase.

At the very least, the framing inspection will be conducted separately from the electrical/mechanical inspections. While HVAC may only take three to seven days to install, the rest of the mechanicals, from plumbing to electrical, can take two to four weeks. This step shouldn’t be rushed, because getting stuck in inspections can draw out construction even longer and prevent the project from moving forward. The building construction phase is where the project comes to life. It is a critical step because it involves multiple working parts and deadlines. Since new construction is often larger than older homes, it may skew your perception of the price. While initially a larger investment, the cost of building a new home is often cheaper per square foot and provides more space for your money. For example, a 1,500 square foot home built in the 1960’s costs on average $148 per square foot. New construction, with 2,467 square feet, costs only $103 per square foot.

As protesters blocked police from entering, a law enforcement officer beat a protester with a baton and a protester beat the officer’s helmet with an empty five-gallon water jug. At UC Berkeley, students set up a Gaza solidarity encampment at Sproul Plaza — the historic ground zero of the 1960s free speech movement — demanding that UC divest from the Israel-Hamas war. At Yale, at least 60 protesters who camped at Beinecke Plaza were arrested after the university said they refused a final request to leave voluntarily. School officials said employees who can work remotely will continue to do so and added that supervisors would be in contact with workers. “I was immediately presented with the scene and thought there was a shooter,” said Christina, who added that she bumped into a couple of students who were injured during the protest.

Additional points to consider about how long does it take to build a new house

One of the most important steps in building a house is laying the foundation, which involves leveling and preparing the site, as well as installing footings and elements such as drains. You also need to waterproof the foundation, and the foundation work will need to pass an inspection. During this step, the contractor will install walls, windows, and doors, as well as the floor and roof systems. What’s known as the skeleton of your new house is starting to take shape!

Presented by the U.S. Green Building Council – California

The White House earlier Tuesday condemned the standoffs at Columbia and Cal Poly Humboldt, where protesters occupied two buildings until officers with batons intervened overnight and arrested 25. Officials estimated the Northern California campus’ total damage at more than $1 million. NYPD officers acted after the school’s president said there was no other way to ensure safety and restore order on campus and sought help from the department. The occupied building had expanded the demonstrators’ reach from an encampment elsewhere on the Ivy League school’s grounds. New York City police cleared 30 to 40 people from Columbia University’s Hamilton Hall late Tuesday after pro-Palestinian protesters occupied the administration building earlier in the day.

Fiberglass insulation is used in unfinished walls, floors and ceilings. It comes in rolls and is installed in-between studs, joists, and beams. The average cost for fiberglass insulation is between $0.30 to $1.50 per square foot. The national average cost of insulation is $6,530, and drywall is $13,184. The two together typically take up 5% of the average construction budget.

Building a home is a huge project, and the average build will involve 22 subcontractors working on the home. Russell Wing, a top-selling agent who has sold 83% more single-family homes than the average agent in Union County, North Carolina, shares insight on the benefits of a custom home. Depending on how busy your local inspection office is, this could take some time to schedule. Your home is almost livable — but there are a few more necessary steps to take before you can move in. HVAC systems come in several different types, from window units that cost as little as $70 all the way up to geothermal heat pumps that cost $31,000.

Post-Construction Stage

The final walkthrough is your opportunity to go through the house and make sure everything is as you requested. The final home inspection is where a home inspector looks over everything. Vanities and cabinets are the next things to be installed in your home. Drywall is hung throughout the interior of the house, as well as on the ceiling. The most common types of insulation are fiberglass, cellulose, or foam spray insulation.

As you start to bring in more income, make sure your lifestyle stays the same. Use the extra money to continue building wealth and not to buy the latest gadget. You’ve done it—you’ve learned how to design a website, you’ve refined your web page design and now you’re ready for launch.

Final home inspection

It projects 11 million one-way passengers per year, with fares that Edens said will be comparable to airline ticket costs. The trains will offer rest rooms, Wi-Fi, food and beverage sales and the option to check luggage. That sort of infrastructure interdependency and complexity holds true throughout Manor Lords. Getting a town humming along smoothly takes a lot of planning (and trial and error) to make sure you’ve got everything you need in place.

You also will want to install flooring or carpet throughout your home. Nationally, the average cost of cabinets and countertops is $17,775, while flooring costs an average of $13,019. Your home interior can be customized to your liking, but the cost can go up depending on the labor you pay for, the quality of paint you select, and whether you’re considering special treatments.

Those trees take a while to grow — they’re trees, after all — but pairing a forester’s hut with a logging camp can actually provide a steady (if slow) and renewable supply of timber. Think of burgage plots as mixed-used zoning where your town’s families will build houses and workshops. Depending on the size and shape of the burgage plot, there might be room for additional housing (adding a house for a second family to the plot) or an extension (for a garden or a workshop). Being able to manage your debt is a vital part of building wealth. For example, you shouldn’t view your mortgage in the same way as credit card debt.

When installed correctly, insulation reduces heating and cooling costs. The full insulation of one room, like a basement or garage for example, costs between $2,400 and $8,600. Depending on the size of the lot and its location, this step could cost anywhere from 8 cents to $2 per square foot. A flat surface is necessary to build a home, so you’ll need to level the land.

It should provide proper graspability which the code recognizes a Type I and Type II handrail to have. Next, you divide the height by the number of treads (15 into 106), producing the exact tread height (7.06 inches). Start by measuring the width of the opening, then cut a treated 2”x4” to length to attach to the side of the house as an anchor for the stringers. Remember to take 3” off the length of the anchor board to allow for the thickness of the end stringers. Allow for a stringer at each end of the steps and at 16” intervals in between. Use corrosion-resistant screws and nails to assemble the steps.

34 Apartment Decorating Ideas to Personalize Your Rental

This may seem counterintuitive, but a large statement rug can actually make a smaller living room feel larger. Not only does a well-placed rug add a lot of texture and warmth to a room, but a small living room can feel grander and more spacious with the right size rug. One of the best ways to ensure your small space doesn't feel sterile is to add something living to it. A bouquet of fresh flowers is every designer's trick to finishing a room, but a potted plant or air plant are also great ideas.

MORE APARTMENT DECORATING IDEAS:

The first rule of decorating a small apartment is to treat it with as much respect and care as you would a larger space. Pay special attention to proportion and scale so that big pieces like beds, dining tables, and seating like couches fit your small space without overwhelming it. If you're lucky enough to live in a space with plenty of large, bright windows, use them as your focal point. Organize the room to place furniture near windows for an open, airy look that won't feel closed-in (even if you're working with limited space).

Incorporate Chairs Into Your Layout

Not only will a headboard and/or bed frame serve as a focal point in your bedroom, but it'll be a major upgrade from putting your mattress directly on the floor. For some guidance, take notes from this space designed by Arent & Pyke. The curves of this headboard along with the warm, deep colors ground the room and fill it with an edgy intensity, while pink linens soften things up. To make a rental feel more personal and homey, make your mark with a monogramed shower curtain, towels, or robe. Alexander Reid used a garden stool and filled all the blank surface space with a gallery wall. Many railroad apartments have a windowless room at the center that connects the front and back rooms and relies on them for natural light.

Install wall-mount sconces that don't need to be hardwired, or place lamps on a narrow console. Older buildings may have character, but some original elements can get in the way of your best apartment decorating ideas. Rather than cringe at something you don't like, embrace it and find a workaround. If the bathroom tile is a shade you can't stand, pick a different color to serve as the primary hue.

I think it is one of the easiest apartment decorating ideas because it looks super put together and adds life to the space with such minimal effort. Decorilla emerged in 2010 when a group of passionate interior designers envisioned a platform to connect clients with top-notch design expertise. Since its inception, Decorilla has collaborated with thousands of professional designers who have transformed countless homes and commercial spaces worldwide. If you find yourself with a lease that’s strict on decoration updates, always remember you can sidestep rental limitations with damage-free modern apartment decor. What’s more, decoration that doesn’t require nails is also great for people who prefer to change up their interior often. Many interior decor stores sell intricate and colorful doorknobs that could be just what your modern apartment design needs.

In a studio, dividing your living and sleeping areas is the best way to make the place where you crash feel more like home. Get creative with room separators, opting for screens, benches, or even a tall bookcase. Sophie has been an interior stylist and journalist for over 20 years and has worked for many of the main interior magazines during that time, both in-house and as a freelancer. For H&G, she writes features about interior design – and is known for having an eye for a beautiful room.

Modern Apartment Decor: How to Decorate Your Apartment to be Unique

Whatever the preexisting problem with your space is, fear not because there are plenty of ways to at least minimize those eyesores. Below, we draw from some of our favorite apartment tours to figure out the most impactful solves for the most common apartment design woes. From simple additions (like displaying your book or record collection) to more complicated ones (like creating a statement wall), these should at least minimize your decor-based pains. Whether you take on the task by yourself or make use of online interior design services, you need calming apartment decorating ideas.

"Large-scale art is a really great way to fill space, but it can be very expensive," Margolis points out. "I suggest finding stock images and working with a third-party printer for sourcing and framing large-scale art," she recommends. To create a gallery wall in the office of this West Hollywood rental, the designer sourced artwork from Minted, Society 6, and even printed digital art from Etsy and framed it herself.

Go for an all encompassing color scheme

Choose a soothing color for a monochromatic theme, as designer Benjamin Dhong did here. The green monochrome approach prevents the room from looking busy while the distressed fireplace mantel treatment and rich velvets warm it up. From accepting moving out of the house you grew up in or to a new state with friends, there are so many unknowns in your journey to feeling at home in your new space.

Here, blue-patterned curtains dress the window, while blue throw pillows on the bed work with a yellow headboard for a cheerful palette. You don't have to have a green thumb to bring beautiful greenery to your space. In apartments that lack those lush, leafy views, bring the outdoors inside by incorporating plants in your interior. If you're not the plant parent type, opt for faux leaves staged in attractive vases for a touch of color without the upkeep. A built-in bookcase, a comfy chair, and good lighting officially designate this whimsical corner as the perfect reading nook. Designed by Andrew Flesher, the white shiplap and butterfly print surrounding the bookcase offers a whimsy feel.

Maybe you've always loved the look of simple, streamlined spaces or you've been a diehard minimalist for years—if either is the case, a minimalist apartment will probably appeal to you. If you have an awkwardly cut-up house or apartment, don't feel like you have to be stuck to the rules of which rooms serve which purpose. If your living room simply doesn't work with a TV, dedicate a smaller den or bedroom as your "movie-watching room" and keep your living room for socializing. Built-in units are every apartment dweller's dream, but if you are lucky enough to have them, consider painting them a darker color than the rest of the room. This not only adds a focal point in your space but can also create the illusion of more depth as well. Poufs are one of those miracle decor pieces that simply work in every small space.

Apartment decor ideas: 13 ways to design for impact

apartment interior design ideas

If your apartment lacks a designated entry, try this apartment decorating idea to create your dropzone with a few wall-mounted pieces. Choose a unit with a shelf on top for grab-and-go items like your keys and sunglasses. Finish the setup by hanging a large mirror for last-minute touch-ups on your way out the door.

Trade Doors for Curtains

'Tall and skinny, floor to ceiling, just a sideboard, even graduated to fit under the slope of a ceiling – the possibilities are endless. This is particularly important for your apartment living room ideas. Here, in this London apartment designed by Elicyon, apartment layout very much prioritizes the view of the skyline beyond. Decorating an apartment needs to be done with more forethought than you would apply to a whole house.

Upgrade the Lighting

Start by considering the main elements in your living room individually but also think of how they fit together. Essential pieces in a balanced living room include the sofa, coffee table, walls, and the TV cabinet. When you consider a couch, for instance, you’ll think of possible throw pillows. But in the greater scheme of things, these accents should match those on the wall, coffee table, and cabinet. In any small space, using mirrors is a decorating trick that works wonders. Hang a large mirror in your apartment's dining space, living room, or bedroom across from a window so it's in a prime position to reflect natural light into the room.

Invest in lamps to place on end tables, nightstands, and occasional tables. Position floor lamps to illuminate dark corners and hang plug-in sconces in hallways or above sofas. Plug-in undercabinet lighting will give your kitchen work areas new life and make cooking easier. A floating shelf arrangement is an apartment decorating idea that can be used to show off a collection of decorative objects and mementos. Simple shelving staggered for a unique look works as a rotating display you can quickly update. Wood or metal goes with almost anything, so you can use them with any furniture style.

Take a cue from designer Andrea May and choose a chic, fringe ottoman for added style. Decorating expert Eddie Ross is a pro at giving small spaces big personality. Watch as he shares the small apartment decorating ideas he used to make his own home look fabulous. Embrace these inspiring ideas and customize them for your own decorating needs. A cramped eating space can be dinner party-worthy with a few innovative strategies. Use clear chairs or a glass-top table to expand the space and make it feel bigger visually.

From the living room to the primary bedroom, here's exactly how to stretch your dollar when you're decorating on a dime. Lighting influences every aspect of modern apartment design, from wall color to decor. The paint color on the walls, for instance, will appear differently in a home with softer light and one with cooler artificial light. Decor, like mirrored and metallic items, not only enhances the look of a room but also doubles the light. Essential furniture is a must, but can quickly become pointless in your modern apartment design if it is too big. Save yourself frustration and heartache by noting your home’s wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling measurements when starting to design your apartment.

Hang a gallery wall of artwork around the TV to frame it, and surround the display with furniture. This TV could have been placed on the console table beneath it, but using the wall leaves the tabletop available for serving when entertaining. Plus, having a piece of furniture beneath a wall-mounted TV grounds it and prevents it from seeming as if there's a random object floating on the wall. Finding non-permanent apartment decorating ideas is key to making a rental feel like home.

5 Simple Ways to Make Your Home Ready for Spring.

Small apartment decorating ideas on a budget require a little creativity and ingenuity, especially if you want your deposit back. Proving that temporary can be clever, this display of black-and-white prints is installed with neon pink washi tape. Mixing mostly-black prints with lighter images brings depth to the casual arrangement. If you don't have room for a dining table, use comfortable stools to create cozy island seating in the kitchen. Not only does an island allow you to tuck the stools away when they're not in use, but it also adds another cooking surface for small kitchens with limited space. Milk and Honey Life matched this island with other wood details in the room to warm up the white walls, create plenty of surface area, and save space with stools.

Bathroom Furnishings

Keep in mind that lightweight curtains will work best with tension rods. Thousands of temporary wallpaper options make it possible for tenants to really put their style stamp on their apartment. With origins tracing back to 206BCE China, the folding screen is here to stay. Nowadays, these dividers come in every possible style, from oriental to contemporary. You can use it as a strictly decorative feature or as a beautiful room divider.

If you're renting, you can recreate this look with a hard-wired light—just pick a cord that matches your wall color. While there are tips and tricks to make the most of your square footage, there are few hard-and-fast rules you can't bend. Without building a home from scratch, you won't have complete control over the color palette. Here, interior designer Christine Vroom pairs the gray-blue kitchen cabinets with a deep blue sofa — the end result is so chic. Swap a traditional coffee table for a spacious ottoman, which doubles as extra seating when guests are over.

If you are looking for one of the trendiest apartment decorating ideas, you need these fashion coffee table books. Coffee table books are an essential decorative piece in my apartment! Of all of the apartment decorating ideas, this one is definitely my favorite. Firstly, zoning is the practice of creating separate areas in a multi-function room with color and decor like rugs.

Simplicity in layout and color scheme can often be best in smaller spaces, as proven in this tiny New York City bathroom designed by Shawn Henderson. This formula (pretty shelves, matching hardware, and simple, high-end accessories) is also always an easy win in a rental. High-end brackets that match the hardware and other surfaces will keep it feeling consistent.

Whether faux or real, a large oversized plant is a great way to add a bit of hominess and warmth to your small living room. Bringing the outside in will lighten up your home and give it a fresh feel. Chasing the latest trend means you will have to redecorate before you know it, so focus on choosing quality furniture and tasteful decor that will stand the test of time.

When an interior designer decided to make a big move during the worst months of the pandemic, she planned her new rental around several key pieces. If you have hunted for an apartment solo in a pricy metropolitan area like New York, San Francisco, or Miami, you’ll doubtlessly be inured to some all-too-familiar trade-offs. Prepare to live off of peanut butter sandwiches for the next three years. Find a spot that’s just two blocks from the subway and allows for you to pay off that journalism degree? Better get used to living in the cozy confines of 500 square feet.

You can buy a pass for two-hour slots for a day or the entire week of your voyage. Things You Should Know About Cruise Ship Spas

Once you’re in your sumptuous suite, there are a choice of Otium offerings unique to Silversea. Otium has two flavors of balcony benefits, one for warm weather and one for cold. If you’re in a warm climate, your butler will set you up with suncream and drinks. I’m letting you know this because some cruisers (me) have been known to double tip, making for an awkward conversation at the spa services desk when you want to get the amount adjusted.

Your Bill Likely Already Includes Some Gratuity.

Cruise ship spa staff are usually trained and certified professionals in their respective fields, often with several years of experience. They may hold qualifications from recognized institutions and have expertise in various treatments and wellness practices. Manned by a trained professional staff adept at helping clientele unwind, the spa’s extensive offerings and skilled service have rendered it a very desirable shipboard refuge for many voyagers in transit. For cruise-goers looking to escape and be pampered, the on-deck spa can prove the ultimate oasis amid the waves. It stands out with its Balinese-inspired approach, blending traditional Eastern therapies with modern wellness techniques.

Should I chat with the therapist during the treatment?

Institute staff, along with the Kérastase Flagship Salon team in our fleet, diagnose your individual haircare needs and prescribe personalized treatment options just for you. On Edge-series ships, the thermal suite, called SEA Thermal Suite, takes luxury to new heights. Designed by Kelly Hoppen in soothing neutrals and deliciously tactile textures, this is a space in which you could easily indulge your senses all day long. Body treatments range from massage to cleansing scrubs and reviving wraps, using products ranging from detoxifying seaweed to frangipani, the scent of the tropics.

I have been cruising since 2004 and have sailed on dozens of cruises all over the world. As the creator of this website, I want to help families plan fun cruises free of stress and filled with adventure! If you have previously sailed on the same cruise line, you are likely a member of its loyalty program. Check and see whether your status entitles you to any kind of discount. Even the lowest tier membership may receive a discount or promotional pricing. Although you may not be able to get away with something like that on land, for whatever reason, the spa seems loathed to miss the opportunity to actually get you in there for your appointment.

With that in mind, nearly all cruise ships offer spas, salons and fitness centers that can help you look and feel your best when you sail. If one of your primary goals on your vacation is to relax, then you’ll want to be sure to check out the cruise spa. While cruise ship spas may vary in terms of size, price and luxuriousness, you will certainly find at least some basic standard services that can help you unwind and indulge your senses. Finally, some lines also offer lower prices on spa treatments if booked at certain times or days. For instance, there may be lower prices for treatments that happen on the day of boarding (when many passengers aren’t thinking about the spa) and higher prices during a day at sea when there is more demand.

What is the Thermal Suite?

This spa isn’t just about pampering; it’s about creating a harmonious balance for mind and body. Known for its innovative treatments like zero gravity bed massages and Iyashi dome, along with AquaClass spa cabins and Goop products. Heading out on an excursion straight after a massage is not ideal, nor is getting all made up for dinner in a hurry straight after a facial. To make the most of your treatment, factor in time to relax, snooze, and let the therapy continue its good work. You don’t have to decide on the spot; you can take it back to your stateroom and think about what you’d like. The experienced therapists will be happy to talk you through the different options. If you want to book a massage, manicure, haircut or other service, you have a few options. First, if you have a specific time that you want to go, then we’d suggest booking as soon as possible.

There’s a Crystalarium, a serene space with natural stone walls and a centerpiece of an amethyst crystal, believed to have healing powers. On Solstice-series ships, the Persian Garden has a wall of glass, so you can gaze at the ocean from your heated bed. Dropping off to sleep is a sure sign that the therapist is doing a good job.

Expect to pay a significant markup compared to land-based treatments and services. And, I make a point of stocking up whenever I am onboard a ship. Often times the spa may be running specials that can only be purchased the first day.

From the thermal suite areas of Viking’s LivNordic Spa to the serene plunge pools and exclusive spa suites on the newest ships, these spas offer more than just treatments—they promise a transformative experience. Whether you’re seeking a rejuvenating facial or a relaxing massage, our curated list of the best cruise ship spas will guide you to your perfect ocean cruise retreat. The spa and fitness areas usually have a thermal suite or at least a locker room with a steam room or sauna. The newest big cruise ships go all out with their thermal suites.

Run by Canyon Ranch, the suite includes a good-sized pool, a whirlpool, reflexology basin to relax your feet and sensory showers with different pulse options. Sauna-lovers will be in heaven, with a choice of a traditional Finnish sauna, an aromatic steam room and an herbal sauna before cooling down with the ice fountain. If you are receiving a treatment, then there is the list price of the service. But on top of that, you’ll have an automatic gratuity charge that’s included. This is normally 18-20% of the cost, depending on the cruise line’s policy.

Acupuncture can be used to treat chronic pain (headaches or muscle pain), insomnia and seasickness. In reflexology, a therapist applies pressure to the feet, hands and ears to activate chi (a healing life energy) in parts of the body that correspond with the pressure points manipulated. Reflexology is often combined with massage for a more complete treatment. Eastern treatments, cosmetic and "medispa" (short for medical spa) services are growing in popularity. The Serene Spas on Regent Seven Seas Cruises' newest ships are especially striking — picture plenty of marble flooring, a curved wooden desk and Swarovski crystal sculptures.

From soothing body scrubs and wraps to rejuvenating manicures and pedicures, indulge in self-care and relaxation as the spa’s comprehensive menu of services attends to your body, mind, and spirit. Escape to this blissful spa at sea, where wellness and serenity float tranquility by. Most spas have age restrictions, but some have services for tweens/teens. For example, Royal Caribbean has its YSPA program for guests 13 to 17.

On these Oasis Class and Royal Amplified ships, the spa experience is as unforgettable as all the thrilling delights you’ll find on deck. Access to the retreat is free for passengers booked in Aqua-class cabins; others can buy a weekly or daily pass. The first snow grotto on the silver seas (there is even a snow-making machine) is just one example of how every aspect of Viking’s therapeutic experience ties back to the brand's Nordic roots. There’s a simplicity to the LiVNordic spa—much like a folk melody—and the trick here is to allow your body to adjust to rapid hot and cold temperature changes in the sauna and cold pool. With treatments neatly divided into categories to promote mindfulness, rest, and detox, you can customize your treatments and float, spirited and carefree like a Norse god or goddess.

The thermal suite Aqua Therapy Centre, featuring thalassotherapy/steam room/sauna areas, as well as sensory showers and a "reflexology basin," is the ultimate in peaceful relaxation. You can buy a pass for two-hour slots for a day or the entire week of your voyage. Look out, too, for the line's only medi-spa (set on a private deck atop the main spa), offering acupuncture treatments and cosmetic services like Botox, dermal fillers or Thermage. The enhanced spa contains 17 treatment rooms for standout treatment options supported by Elemis products, like the Thai Herbal Poultice Massage or Biotec antiaging facial.
